Istanbul

Turkish Airlines has finalized a major long-term aircraft agreement with Boeing, placing a firm order for 100 Boeing 737-8 airplanes and securing options for 50 additional 737 MAX aircraft. Announced in New York on September 23, 2026, the transaction concludes discussions that began in 2025 and represents Turkish Airlines’ largest Boeing single-aisle aircraft order. The airline’s own market disclosure says the aircraft are scheduled for delivery between 2033 and 2037, underscoring that this is a future fleet decision rather than an immediate change to passenger schedules.

The agreement links one of Türkiye’s best-known international companies with a major U.S. aerospace manufacturer and its nationwide supplier network. Boeing said the new aircraft are intended to strengthen Turkish Airlines’ short- and medium-haul network from its Istanbul hub. Turkish Airlines said the purchase is part of its long-term growth strategy, while the U.S. Department of Commerce identified the deal as supporting 101,000 American jobs. The announcement was made during a week of high-level international meetings in New York and was finalized in the presence of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

A firm order for 100 aircraft, with flexibility for 50 more

The structure of the agreement matters. Turkish Airlines has committed to buy 100 737-8 aircraft, while the remaining 50 airplanes are options rather than firm purchases. Options generally give an airline the ability to add aircraft later under agreed commercial terms, but they do not require the carrier to take every airplane. That distinction means the confirmed fleet commitment is 100 aircraft, with the potential total rising to 150 if Turkish Airlines exercises all of its options.

The agreement also gives Turkish Airlines substitution rights for the Boeing 737-10, the largest member of the 737 MAX family. Boeing and Turkish Airlines described that provision as a way to provide additional capacity-planning flexibility as the carrier evaluates passenger demand and operational needs across its network. The public disclosures do not state how many, if any, of the 100 firm aircraft or 50 option aircraft could ultimately be taken as 737-10s. What is confirmed is that the carrier has retained the right to substitute that larger model under the agreement.

For travelers, the long delivery period is the most important practical detail. Turkish Airlines’ September 23 disclosure through Türkiye’s Public Disclosure Platform states that deliveries are scheduled from 2033 through 2037. The order therefore does not itself announce new U.S. routes, immediate service increases, lower fares, or aircraft assignments at particular airports. Those decisions would come later, as the airline determines how to deploy aircraft entering its fleet over that five-year delivery window.

From 2025 negotiations to a finalized purchase

The finalized order follows an earlier phase of planning. In September 2025, Turkish Airlines said it had completed negotiations with Boeing for 100 firm and 50 option 737-8/10 MAX aircraft, but said the order would be placed once its discussions with engine manufacturer CFM International had been successfully concluded. At that time, the airline separately announced an agreement for up to 75 Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The 2026 announcement turns the previously contemplated narrowbody transaction into a finalized purchase decision.

Turkish Airlines’ September 2026 market disclosure adds a procedural detail not included in the shorter public announcements. It says the company’s board adopted the decision to purchase the 150 B737MAX aircraft on September 18, 2026, and that public disclosure of the decision had been delayed during the process. The carrier publicly disclosed the decision on September 23. That sequence helps distinguish between the company’s internal approval, the public disclosure to investors, and the New York announcement of the agreement with Boeing.

Boeing has characterized the transaction as Turkish Airlines’ largest single-aisle order from the manufacturer. Turkish Airlines likewise called it its largest-ever Boeing single-aisle aircraft order. Both companies said the deal supports a longer-term fleet-expansion strategy and the airline’s short- and medium-haul network. The airline operates from Istanbul, a hub that connects domestic destinations in Türkiye with regional and international markets, and Boeing said the incoming 737-8 fleet is intended for high-demand domestic and international routes.

A continuing Boeing relationship and an Istanbul-focused strategy

The new order builds on an already substantial relationship between the carrier and Boeing. Boeing said Turkish Airlines, including its AJet operation, currently operates more than 200 Boeing airplanes. The manufacturer listed 737 MAX aircraft, 787 Dreamliners, 777s, 737 Next-Generation models and 777 Freighters among the Boeing aircraft used by Turkish Airlines and AJet. The 737 MAX agreement also follows Turkish Airlines’ 2025 order for up to 75 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, connecting the narrowbody purchase to a wider fleet-investment program.

Turkish Airlines and Boeing have emphasized operational flexibility rather than specific future routes. Boeing said the 737-8 offers range, payload flexibility and fuel efficiency that can support the carrier’s network plans. Boeing also said the 737 MAX family reduces fuel use and emissions by 20 percent compared with the airplanes it replaces, presenting that figure as part of the aircraft family’s operating and environmental performance. Neither company, however, announced projected ticket-price effects, route-by-route capacity plans, or a timetable for new passenger services tied to this specific order.

For communities with personal or commercial ties between the United States and Türkiye, the transaction reflects the long planning cycles behind global air service. Aircraft acquisitions affect an airline’s future choices on fleet replacement, capacity and network development, but an order alone does not determine where a particular airplane will fly. Travelers should therefore separate the confirmed aircraft purchase from speculation about near-term U.S. service, additional nonstop routes or changes at individual airports. Those details were not included in the available public disclosures.

U.S. jobs and industrial participation

The U.S. Department of Commerce included the Turkish Airlines agreement in a September 25 announcement about transportation-sector commercial deals associated with the United Nations General Assembly period in New York. The department said the Turkish Airlines contract supports 101,000 U.S. jobs. It also said the group of transportation agreements it highlighted supported more than 117,000 American jobs in total, making the Turkish Airlines transaction the largest component of that announced total.

That jobs figure is an economic-impact claim from the Commerce Department, not a statement that 101,000 people will be newly hired at once or that all employment will be located at a single Boeing facility. Commercial-aircraft production involves final assembly as well as a broad network of engineering, manufacturing, systems, components, logistics and supplier work. Boeing also said the Turkish Airlines agreement includes industrial participation connected to Türkiye’s aviation ecosystem, although neither Boeing nor Turkish Airlines publicly identified a complete list of participating companies, facilities or specific commitments.

The most concrete public facts are straightforward: Turkish Airlines has committed to 100 Boeing 737-8s, holds options for 50 additional 737 MAX aircraft, and may use substitution rights for the larger 737-10. The airline says deliveries are planned for 2033 through 2037. Boeing says the aircraft will support Turkish Airlines’ short- and medium-haul network from Istanbul, while the U.S. Department of Commerce says the contract supports 101,000 U.S. jobs. The eventual use of the options, the final mix of aircraft variants, route assignments and passenger-facing effects remain decisions for the years ahead.
