Turkey’s close ties with Trump help bring the U.S. president to Ankara

, , , , , , 0

Turkey’s hosting of the NATO summit is not just about logistics. AP reports that Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s close ties with Donald Trump helped secure the U.S. president’s attendance in Ankara, even as Trump has been sharply critical of many other European leaders.

That makes the summit a notable example of personal diplomacy shaping major international events. Turkey gains added visibility by hosting the meeting, and the summit places Ankara at the center of conversations about alliance unity, defense spending, and the future direction of NATO.

For Turkish American readers, the story is a reminder that Turkey can still play a significant role in world affairs when its leadership has direct access to powerful partners. It also shows how relationships between leaders can affect the public profile of Turkey in Washington and beyond.

Trump’s Turkey Trip Opens a New Chapter in U.S.-Turkey Ties at NATO Summit

, , , 0

President Donald Trump’s trip to Ankara for the NATO summit quickly became one of the most closely watched moments in recent U.S.-Turkey relations. During talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Trump said the United States would lift sanctions imposed on Turkey in 2020 and signaled that a possible F-35 fighter jet sale could be on the table.

The move matters because Turkey was removed from the F-35 program after buying Russia’s S-400 air defense system. That decision created years of friction between the two countries, so Trump’s comments represent a meaningful shift in tone, even though the legal and congressional obstacles remain significant.

For Turkish Americans, the development may be seen as more than a defense headline. It also reflects how Washington and Ankara continue to test whether a closer working relationship is possible inside NATO. The meeting in Ankara suggests both sides are willing to reopen conversations that had been frozen for years.

There is still a long way to go before any policy change becomes reality. But Trump’s remarks, made face to face with Erdogan, were enough to put U.S.-Turkey ties back in the spotlight and raise expectations about what comes next.

Trump’s Turkey Visit Includes New Signal on F-35 Fighter Jets

, , , , , 0

President Trump has signaled that he may be open to letting Turkey back into the F-35 fighter jet program, according to Axios. The possibility would mark a major change in U.S. defense policy after Turkey was removed from the program in 2019.

Turkey’s exclusion came after Ankara bought Russia’s S-400 missile defense system, a move that triggered deep concerns in Washington and led to a break in the F-35 partnership. Any renewed discussion of sales would therefore carry both military and diplomatic weight.

For Turkish Americans, the issue matters because it sits at the center of the U.S.-Turkey relationship. A change in policy could signal a warmer period in bilateral ties, but it would also likely face strong scrutiny from lawmakers and security analysts.

The outcome is still uncertain, but the fact that the White House is even entertaining the idea makes this one of the most important Turkey-related developments tied to Trump’s visit. It could shape future cooperation between the two NATO allies.
