Cevdet Özdemir Begins 2026–2028 Term Leading Turkish American Associations Federation

Cevdet Özdemir has begun a new two-year term as president of the Turkish American Associations Federation, or TADF, following the organization’s regular general assembly in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Türk USA News reported on September 21 that Özdemir was elected for the 2026–2028 period, s쳮ding Gülay Aydemir after her two terms in the role. The federation’s own website also published a September 20 announcement identifying Özdemir as its newly elected president, while other Turkish-American community outlets described the same leadership transition.

The election marked a formal change at one of the Turkish-American community’s umbrella organizations. TADF brings together associations operating in different parts of the United States, according to reporting by Ally Daily and the federation’s own description of itself as a longstanding umbrella body. Its role is therefore not limited to a single local program or one city’s membership: the federation is intended to provide a common structure through which separate associations can maintain contact, exchange information and pursue shared priorities.

A General Assembly in Perth Amboy

The general assembly was held on September 20 at Cornucopia Cruise Line in Perth Amboy, according to Türk USA News. The report said 22 associations supported Özdemir’s candidacy and 17 associations attended the assembly. It also described an organized meeting process in which a presiding council was formed before the election, with İlhan Kodalak selected as chair and Gizem Çelik and Mustafa Seven serving as secretaries.

Özdemir was the sole candidate, running on a single slate. That account is consistent with reports by Ally Daily and The Türkiye Times, both of which said he was elected without a competing candidate or list. The election itself was therefore not presented as a contested race between rival programs. Instead, the focus of the available coverage was the transition from Aydemir’s administration to a new board with a stated agenda for the next two years.

The date of the assembly is also confirmed by a subsequent Türk USA News report on September 23, which described Özdemir as having been elected at the September 20 general assembly. That follow-up said he issued a message thanking association presidents, representatives and members of the Turkish-American community who supported the new administration. Giresun Gazete Işık likewise reported that Özdemir viewed the position as a responsibility centered on service, unity and solidarity rather than simply a title.

Transition From Gülay Aydemir’s Administration

Özdemir s쳮ds Gülay Aydemir, who had served two terms as TADF president. Ally Daily characterized her tenure as four years, and Türk USA News similarly described her as having completed two terms before the leadership change. The accounts do not describe a break in the federation’s institutional structure; rather, they present the September assembly as a scheduled transition to a new 2026–2028 administration.

That continuity matters for a federation whose work depends on relationships among independently organized member associations. The incoming administration inherits a network in which organizations may have different local histories, constituencies and priorities. The election reporting does not suggest that those local identities will be replaced by a centralized model. Instead, the stated objective is to improve the federation’s ability to connect associations and help them work more closely where their interests overlap.

In his post-election message, Özdemir said the new TADF would emphasize action rather than personal relationships, according to Türk USA News. The statement gives an early indication of how the new president wants the administration to be evaluated: not only by its election or public declarations, but by whether it produces visible work for affiliated associations and the broader Turkish-American community. The reporting available so far does not set out a detailed implementation schedule, budget or list of first-year projects.

Priorities for the 2026–2028 Term

The new administration has identified unity and stronger communication among associations as central priorities. Türk USA News reported that the program calls for better communication among organizations in different states and for reinforcing a shared sense of solidarity within the Turkish-American community. Ally Daily independently highlighted the same goals, describing communication between associations and community unity as leading themes of the new term.

Those aims place emphasis on the federation’s coordinating role. A national umbrella organization can be most useful when member associations have reliable ways to learn about one another’s work, identify areas for joint activity and raise concerns that may affect more than one local group. The sources do not announce a new communications platform, membership procedure or meeting calendar. For now, the commitment is a stated direction for the administration rather than a published operational plan.

Financial transparency is another announced priority. Türk USA News and Ally Daily both listed transparent management among the themes of the incoming term. The reporting does not identify a revised audit procedure, a timetable for financial reporting, a new budget policy or a public-disclosure format. Still, the decision to place transparency alongside unity and communication establishes a benchmark against which member associations may assess the administration over the 2026–2028 period.

The agenda also calls for broader participation by young people and women. Türk USA News said the new leadership wants young Turkish Americans to take a more active role and to become future managers and leaders of Turkish-American institutions. The report also included women, businesspeople, academics, artists, athletes and professionals among the groups the federation hopes to engage more fully. Ally Daily separately identified youth and women’s participation as priorities for the new term.

A Cultural Center Remains an Objective, Not a Completed Project

A proposed Turkish Cultural Center is among the most concrete long-range items named in the incoming administration’s program. According to Türk USA News, the new leadership plans to examine available financial resources, potential donation and sponsorship models, and possible partnerships with the Turkish-American business community. The project was presented as an objective to be explored during the term, not as a completed facility or a project already under construction.

The available reporting does not identify a location for a center, a property arrangement, a fundraising target, an operating budget, a construction timetable or an opening date. Those omissions are significant because each would be necessary to move the concept from an announced goal to a defined public project. The most meaningful future developments would therefore be specific steps such as a feasibility study, governance proposal, fundraising structure, site announcement or a formal explanation of how member associations could participate.

Türk USA News listed Özdemir, Hüseyin Bayram, Berat Şahin, Ali Rıza Doğan, Rahmi Yazar, Figen Derinsu, Tiyenshan Muradoğli Ahıskalı, Abdi Akgün, Mustafa Seven, Muammer Özdemir, Kemal İbaş, Hacibey Çatalbaş, Halil Bayram and Erol Akyürek as members of the incoming executive board. The report named Atilla Pak, İlhan Kodalak and Zuhal Özgül to the audit committee, and İbrahim Şentürk, Serdar Şalcıroğlu and Ünal Kayha to the disciplinary committee.

The new administration’s first task will be to turn its broad priorities into practical structures that member associations can see and use. The election has supplied TADF with a new president, a board and a two-year mandate. Its longer-term significance will depend on whether the federation can build regular communication, demonstrate transparent administration, create meaningful openings for new participants and provide clearer detail on the proposed cultural-center initiative. For now, the September 20 assembly in Perth Amboy represents the beginning of Özdemir’s 2026–2028 term and a new phase for the federation’s affiliated associations.
