Trump’s Ankara visit opens new questions about Turkey-U.S. defense ties

, , , , 0

President Donald Trump’s visit to Ankara is putting Turkey-U.S. relations back in the spotlight, especially on defense issues that matter to many Turkish American families and community members.

According to the Associated Press, Trump met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and said the United States will lift sanctions that have limited Turkey’s access to advanced fighter jets. He also said the possibility of selling F-35 aircraft to Turkey is something he would consider, although legal and congressional hurdles still stand in the way.

The discussion is part of a broader NATO summit, but the bilateral meeting between the two leaders is the part many readers will follow most closely. For Turkish Americans, any movement on sanctions, aircraft sales, or defense cooperation could signal a warmer and more practical phase in the relationship between the two countries.

The visit does not guarantee a final deal, but it does show that both sides are again talking seriously about major issues. If the two governments keep the momentum going, the results could affect military cooperation, business confidence, and Turkey’s standing with its allies.

Trump’s Ankara Visit Spurs Fresh Talk of Turkey Sanctions Relief and Possible F-35 Return

, , , , 0

President Donald Trump said in Ankara that the United States will lift defense sanctions on Turkiye and is considering a possible return to the F-35 fighter jet program, according to Reuters reporting republished by GV Wire.

The comments came during Trump’s visit for the NATO summit and signaled a notable shift in a dispute that began after Turkiye bought Russia’s S-400 missile system. That purchase led to sanctions and Turkiye’s removal from the F-35 program, making any new opening a major development for both governments.

Reuters said Trump described the move as part of a broader effort to reset relations with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Even so, the report noted that legal and congressional barriers still stand in the way of any final decision.

For Turkish Americans, the announcement is significant because it could affect defense ties, U.S.-Turkiye cooperation, and the tenor of public debate about the relationship between the two countries. It also puts Ankara back at the center of an issue that many community members follow closely.

Trump’s Turkey Visit Includes New Signal on F-35 Fighter Jets

, , , , , 0

President Trump has signaled that he may be open to letting Turkey back into the F-35 fighter jet program, according to Axios. The possibility would mark a major change in U.S. defense policy after Turkey was removed from the program in 2019.

Turkey’s exclusion came after Ankara bought Russia’s S-400 missile defense system, a move that triggered deep concerns in Washington and led to a break in the F-35 partnership. Any renewed discussion of sales would therefore carry both military and diplomatic weight.

For Turkish Americans, the issue matters because it sits at the center of the U.S.-Turkey relationship. A change in policy could signal a warmer period in bilateral ties, but it would also likely face strong scrutiny from lawmakers and security analysts.

The outcome is still uncertain, but the fact that the White House is even entertaining the idea makes this one of the most important Turkey-related developments tied to Trump’s visit. It could shape future cooperation between the two NATO allies.
