How Travelers Are Using Turkey’s Eastern Border When Flights Are Not an Option
In Turkey’s eastern border region, some travelers were crossing from Iran not for a long visit, but to get online. The AP reports that internet blackouts pushed people to use the Kapikoy crossing in Van province as a temporary way to send messages, handle school applications, and keep work moving.
The story is useful for anyone who follows travel in and out of Türkiye because it shows how border crossings can take on unexpected roles. They are not only entry points for tourism or family visits. In a digital age, they can also become lifelines for communication, banking, education, and job-related tasks.
For Turkish American families, that is a practical reminder that travel plans may be shaped by more than flight availability. Reliable phone service, data access, and the ability to coordinate with relatives can matter just as much as the plane ticket itself.
The AP piece also notes that many travelers were making short trips and then returning home quickly. That makes the crossing especially relevant for people who may need to manage business or family issues without a full relocation.
It is a small but important example of how Turkey continues to function as a connective route for the region.
