U.S. Chamber Marks 100 Years of U.S.-Türkiye Relations With Focus on Trade and Investment

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce used United Nations General Assembly week in New York to place U.S.-Türkiye commercial ties at the center of a high-level centennial gathering. In a September 22 report on its wider program during the 81st U.N. General Assembly, the Chamber said it had hosted an event recognizing 100 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan participated, as did Hamdi Ulukaya, the founder and chief executive of Chobani and chair of the Chamber’s U.S.-Türkiye Business Council. The event linked a historic diplomatic milestone to a current business objective: expanding trade, investment, and company-to-company cooperation.

Additional reporting identifies the gathering as the “100 Years of Friendship” gala, held in New York on September 21 during General Assembly week. Anadolu Agency and Hürriyet Daily News both reported that Erdoğan attended the event, while Anadolu Agency said the gala was organized by the U.S. Chamber and the U.S.-Türkiye Business Council and hosted by Ulukaya. Those matching details—New York, the September 21 date, the same centennial theme, Erdoğan’s participation, Ulukaya’s role, and the two organizing institutions—confirm that the reports concern the same event described in the Chamber’s account.

A Centennial Event With a Business Agenda

The Chamber’s account was concise, but its central message was clear. Suzanne Clark, the Chamber’s president and chief executive, marked the occasion by emphasizing two numbers: a century of ties and a shared government objective of reaching $100 billion in bilateral trade and investment. The Chamber said nearly half of that benchmark has already been achieved and said it would continue pursuing the target through the U.S.-Türkiye Business Council and its more than 100 member companies.

That framing matters because the Chamber did not present the gala as the announcement of a completed trade agreement, a new investment package, or a specific corporate transaction. Rather, it described a continuing agenda. The $100 billion figure functions as a broad direction for the relationship, one that depends on commercial decisions by companies as well as policy choices by the U.S. and Turkish governments. The Chamber’s stated commitment was to help move that agenda forward through its business council and member network.

Reporting from the event offered a fuller view of the gathering’s official and business audience. Anadolu Agency reported that Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek, Trade Minister Ömer Bolat, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacır, Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu, and Family and Social Services Minister Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş attended. It also reported the participation of U.S. Senator Chris Coons, senior U.S. officials, members of Congress, and Mehmet Öz, administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

The attendance list helps explain why the event carried significance beyond a ceremonial dinner. It brought together people who operate in different parts of the bilateral relationship: elected officials, cabinet-level representatives, diplomats, corporate executives, investors, and Turkish American leaders. Such events do not by themselves change market conditions or resolve policy disputes. They can, however, give participants a setting to reinforce priorities, discuss business obstacles, and establish the relationships that often precede more practical work.

Hamdi Ulukaya and the U.S.-Türkiye Business Council

Ulukaya’s role made the event especially relevant to Turkish American business communities. The Chamber identifies him both as Chobani’s chief executive and as chair of its U.S.-Türkiye Business Council. Anadolu Agency likewise described him as the council’s chairman and reported that he hosted the New York gala. His presence beside Erdoğan and other senior officials reflected the role that prominent business leaders can play in conversations that move between diplomacy, investment, employment, and public engagement.

The Chamber said the council has more than 100 member companies and will be part of its effort to pursue the bilateral trade-and-investment target. That organizational base is important because cross-border commerce rarely develops from one high-profile meeting alone. It requires sustained work among companies, professional advisers, industry groups, exporters, investors, and public-sector institutions. A council can provide a forum where firms exchange perspectives, identify common concerns, and communicate business priorities to policymakers.

For Turkish American entrepreneurs and professionals, Ulukaya’s participation also illustrates the practical value of bicultural experience. A person or company that understands commercial expectations in both countries may be able to help prospective partners make better-informed decisions about markets, supply chains, investments, and customer relationships. That kind of contribution is not confined to large corporations. It can include small-business owners, consultants, logistics providers, attorneys, accountants, engineers, researchers, and professionals working in technology, food, manufacturing, finance, transportation, health care, or other sectors.

Anadolu Agency reported that Senator Coons emphasized the contribution of business ties and entrepreneurship to the broader relationship. That observation aligned with the Chamber’s choice to make trade and investment the central theme of its centennial event. The occasion recognized formal relations between governments, but its program also highlighted a basic reality of modern bilateral ties: commercial relationships are maintained by companies and people making day-to-day decisions about hiring, sourcing, selling, investing, and building partnerships.

UN General Assembly Week as a Meeting Point

The Chamber placed the Türkiye event inside its larger U.N. General Assembly program, which included events, bilateral meetings, roundtables, and other engagements with government and business leaders. During General Assembly week, New York becomes a concentrated meeting place for delegations from many countries, international organizations, investors, companies, and civil-society institutions. The Chamber’s broader purpose, according to its report, was to bring the perspective of American business into discussions about economic partnerships, trade, investment, and issues shaping the global economy.

Within that setting, the U.S.-Türkiye gathering was one of several conversations competing for attention, but it had a particularly defined message: the relationship has a long history and its commercial future remains a priority. Hürriyet Daily News reported that Erdoğan used the event to call for new momentum in relations. The report also described the ceremony as marking the upcoming 100th anniversary of diplomatic ties. That wording differs slightly from the Chamber’s description of an event celebrating 100 years, but both accounts clearly identify the same centennial-themed New York gathering and its focus on the future of the bilateral relationship.

The distinction between celebration and accomplishment is worth keeping in mind. The $100 billion target is an aspiration, not a guarantee. The Chamber said nearly half had already been achieved, but it did not provide a new deal or a timetable for reaching the full figure in its September 22 report. Progress will depend on conditions that extend beyond a gala: whether companies find viable partners, whether investors see credible opportunities, whether market access and regulatory questions can be addressed, and whether both countries sustain interest in practical economic cooperation.

What the Gathering Signals for Turkish Americans

For Turkish Americans whose careers, families, or businesses connect the United States and Türkiye, the event offered recognition that diaspora experience can be part of serious commercial diplomacy. The gala included senior government figures, business representatives, and members of the Turkish American community, according to reporting by Hürriyet Daily News. That mix underscored that the relationship is not shaped only by presidential meetings or formal diplomatic statements. It is also influenced by people who work across languages, markets, industries, and professional networks.

The practical opportunities suggested by the Chamber’s agenda are varied. A business may consider exporting goods or services, forming a distribution partnership, evaluating an investment, or locating suppliers and technical expertise. Professionals with familiarity with both countries may help companies understand differences in business practices, consumer preferences, compliance expectations, and logistics. None of those steps is automatic, and no company should treat a high-level event as a substitute for market research, legal advice, financial planning, or due diligence. But the Chamber’s decision to keep the issue visible signals that U.S.-Türkiye commercial links remain an active subject for major business institutions.

The New York gathering also showed the value of durable networks. The strongest cross-border relationships generally grow through repeated contact and clear mutual interests, not through a single speech or headline. The U.S. Chamber’s stated plan to continue working through its U.S.-Türkiye Business Council provides one institutional path for that continuing engagement. Its more than 100 member companies, as described by the Chamber, give the council a platform to keep trade and investment issues before both corporate and government audiences.

Ultimately, the centennial gala was a marker of attention rather than a final result. It brought Erdoğan, Ulukaya, Clark, government officials, business leaders, and Turkish American participants into the same New York conversation during a globally important diplomatic week. The Chamber’s message was forward-looking: the two countries have an economic target still to pursue, and business institutions intend to remain involved. Whether that target is reached will depend on sustained work well beyond the event itself, but the September 21 gathering made clear that trade, investment, and Turkish American business leadership are expected to remain part of the discussion.
