Turkish language

Moving a small grammatical marker within a Turkish question was associated with more accurate answers from preschoolers in a University of Kansas study examining how children interpret language. Researchers Münir Özturhan and Utako Minai found that children made fewer comprehension errors when the question’s grammar highlighted the people being asked about, rather than leaving the question broadly focused. Across 18 children, average accuracy rose from 58% in the baseline condition to 68% in the focused condition. The study, published October 14, 2026, in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, offers evidence that preschoolers can use this grammatical cue, although its design leaves an important alternative explanation unresolved.

The experiment addressed a deceptively difficult question: Can children recognize that every person in a picture has an object without being distracted by an additional, unused object? A child looking at several children, each holding a balloon, may incorrectly reject a statement that every child has a balloon because another balloon is unclaimed. Linguists call this pattern quantifier spreading, or q-spreading. Özturhan and Minai tested whether a language-specific way of directing attention could reduce that error. Their findings concern Turkish-speaking children living in Türkiye, not Turkish American bilingual children, and describe performance on a controlled picture-based task rather than a general measure of language ability.

How a Question Particle Changes the Focus

The grammatical device at the center of the study is the Turkish question particle, conventionally written as mI, whose spoken form varies according to the language’s sound rules. In a simple yes-or-no question, the particle commonly appears at the end of the sentence. It can also follow another sentence element, marking that element as the focus. The researchers compared questions with the particle in its sentence-final position against questions placing it immediately after the subject phrase containing the Turkish word her, meaning every. This moved the question’s focus toward the entire group of people whose actions the children needed to evaluate, while preserving the underlying proposition being checked against the picture.

The paper illustrates the difference with the English renderings “Is every child holding a balloon?” and “Is it every child that is holding a balloon?” Both ask about whether all the children are balloon-holders, but the second explicitly brings that group into focus. English uses a more elaborate sentence construction to express the distinction in these translations. Turkish can produce the relevant focus difference through the particle’s placement without requiring the additional syntactic structure of an English cleft construction. That makes Turkish a useful testing ground for separating children’s sensitivity to focus from difficulties they might have processing a more structurally complicated sentence, the authors explain.

This distinction matters to the experiment because the extra balloon does not make the question’s proposition false: All the pictured children can be holding balloons even when another balloon belongs to nobody. A correct answer therefore requires evaluating the children, not checking whether every balloon has a holder. By focusing the quantified subject, the researchers sought to make the relevant group easier to identify and the irrelevant object easier to disregard. The manipulation was not intended to turn a false proposition into a true one. Instead, it tested whether grammatical focus could help children arrive at the interpretation that adult speakers ordinarily give in this setting.

What the Children Saw and Heard

The child participants ranged from 4 years old to 5 years and 10 months, with an average age of 4 years and 11 months. All lived in Türkiye and attended kindergarten or preschool where instruction was primarily in Turkish. Parents’ language-background questionnaires described them as predominantly monolingual Turkish speakers, with only minimal exposure to English through schooling. No child was reported to have a diagnosed language or developmental disorder. The researchers also tested 18 adult native Turkish speakers living in Türkiye, ages 18 to 38, as a comparison group. Those participant characteristics define the population studied; the experiment did not directly test bilingual development or compare children acquiring different languages.

Each child completed both question conditions on different days, with sessions separated by at least a week. Testing took place over Zoom with the child, a parent and the experimenter present; parents were instructed not to interact with the child during testing. Each condition included five target questions paired with extra-object pictures, five filler questions and two initial practice items. A female native Turkish speaker prerecorded the sentences using natural, child-friendly delivery. Children viewed the pictures, listened to the questions and answered aloud. The investigators also asked children to explain their answers, allowing them to check whether an incorrect rejection was actually linked to the presence of the extra object.

The filler trials helped distinguish the target error from an appropriate negative answer. Some pictures genuinely contradicted their accompanying questions—for example, a picture containing a cat that was not sleeping would not support a statement that every cat was asleep. Other fillers supported affirmative answers. Target and filler items alternated, and the researchers used an item order and its reverse across the two conditions. However, they did not reverse the order of the conditions themselves: Every child received the baseline questions first and the focused questions second. The authors chose that sequence to obtain baseline responses before children encountered the critical focus manipulation, but it also created a limitation for interpreting the improvement.

A Modest Average Gain With Uneven Responses

The analysis covered 180 target responses: 18 children answering five target items in each of two conditions. Children’s observed average accuracy increased by 10 percentage points, from 58% with baseline questions to 68% with subject-focused questions. Adult participants answered accurately on 93% of baseline trials and 100% of focused trials. The child results therefore showed improvement, not the elimination of errors or performance equal to that of the adult comparison group. In their discussion, Özturhan and Minai explicitly acknowledge that accuracy in the focused condition remained below 70%. They identify the limited sample, remote testing and within-participant design as methodological factors that could have affected performance.

The researchers’ statistical analyses supported a difference between conditions. A Bayesian comparison found the observed data approximately 13.7 times more likely under a model that included question condition than under a comparable model without it. That is evidence for an association between the experimental conditions and response accuracy, but it does not mean every child benefited equally. The paper describes different response patterns: Some children consistently gave adult-like answers, some consistently made q-spreading errors, and another group responded more accurately to the focused questions. The average increase thus combines children whose responses changed with children whose responses remained stable across the two testing sessions.

Özturhan and Minai interpret the findings as evidence that children can incorporate morphologically marked focus into sentence comprehension. Their proposed explanation is that highlighting the subject helped some children disengage from the distracting extra object and evaluate the relevant people instead. That attentional mechanism remains an interpretation of the response pattern, however, rather than a directly observed shift in looking behavior in this experiment. The study collected spoken judgments and explanations, and the authors report that they did not include a direct assessment of individual differences. Consequently, the results cannot establish why some children benefited from the manipulation while others continued to make the same errors.

What the Findings Establish—and Leave Open

The study contributes to a broader debate about what young children’s comprehension mistakes reveal. One class of explanations holds that children lack some of the adult linguistic knowledge needed to interpret focus or universal quantification. Another holds that relevant knowledge is already available but can be difficult to use because of attention, discourse or task demands. The authors see their results as consistent with the latter, often called a full-competence account: Changing how a question directs attention improved answers without changing the basic proposition. They also position the study as extending earlier evidence about Turkish children’s production of the question particle by testing whether children use its focus-marking role during comprehension.

The fixed session order nevertheless prevents a clean separation of grammatical focus from experience with the task. Because every child encountered the focused questions in the second session, improved performance could reflect general learning or carryover from the baseline session rather than—or alongside—the particle’s placement. The researchers explicitly acknowledge that possibility and say practical recruitment difficulties prevented them from obtaining a larger sample to counterbalance condition order. Although they discuss earlier quantifier studies that provide limited evidence for improvement simply through repeated exposure, those comparisons cannot resolve the issue within this experiment. Testing different session orders would help determine how much of the observed gain is specifically attributable to focus marking.

Further work also needs to explain the persistent differences among children, particularly those who continued rejecting the target questions despite the focus cue. The authors suggest that their manipulation may have been insufficient for children strongly prone to q-spreading, while emphasizing that they lack the individual-level measurements needed for a compelling explanation. For now, the study’s conclusion is specific: In this small sample of Turkish-speaking preschoolers, subject-focused questions elicited fewer quantifier-spreading errors than baseline questions presented earlier. The findings expand the grammatical devices through which researchers have documented children’s sensitivity to focus, while leaving the size, mechanism and independence of the effect to be clarified by subsequent experiments.
